HANDUSTRiE

Design + Production Concept

2023 - 2025

Prato + Hamburg

The textile and leather sectors are facing major challenges caused by globalised supply chains and the relocation of production abroad. A look at Europe’s historic textile regions shows how essential it is to build collaborative networks - not only to strengthen production, but also to preserve cultural heritage.

The term HANDUSTRiE stands for the connection between craft + industry within design and production processes. Conceived by Rosa as the title for her project, it explores collaborative models between small workshops and large-scale manufacturers. HANDUSTRiE is based on the core thesis that industry and craft can work as complementary systems through co-design.

This project explores:
-> The decline of traditional craftsmanship in Germany and its structural causes
-> The importance of preserving skills and knowledge for future generations
-> Insights from expert interviews within the textile and leather fields
-> The cultural value of manual techniques and specialised know-how

HANDUSTRiE translates these findings into a pilot concept offering a hybrid service model across communication and production. HANDUSTRiE acting as a mediator between craftspeople and industry.

At its core lies an archive system that connects sustainable product development with the preservation of textile and leather techniques.

HANDUSTRiE was awarded the 2025 Senate Prize of Hochschule Niederrhein.
